I was so happy to have my sister visit from Italy [ see photo top left ]she was invaluable to me during this exciting time. The Launch was a great success, and we have been very busy collaborating on many creative projects. I had the pleasure of working with Craig, Evangeline and a bunch of new moms...and moms to be, art directing a dvd.
The sun shone as we shot under the weeping willows down at Jericho beach, and the happy healthy energy radiated from everyone. What a beautiful group of people to be surrounded by.
The large article in The Vancouver Sun brought curious new clients through my doors, and many works in painting and photography have gone to good homes over the past few weeks.
It has been a magical season of eclipses, shooting stars and lots of sunshine for this Leo girl.

Celebration

Our Pre opening launch party last night was such a celebration. Mind you the frost has not quite yet disappeared yet, so it seems even the seasons are late this year.
I have been so busy this winter that not a moment was found to write......so here is what is new.
I was very excited this January to have the opportunity to photograph the advertising campaign for Diane's Lingerie, they are celebrating their 25th anniversary on South Granville and the images
will be used in major newspapers, magazines, transit, a direct mail catalogue and on their website.
It was a bit of a departure for me, and yet working with beautiful women & sumptuous textiles in a graceful home with exquisite interiors, I was also completely in my element.
We created some very lovely evocative images.

In February I retreated to Salt Spring Island for a week to paint and be at one with the quietude of nature. I had the pleasure of my friends gorgeous modern home perched high on a bluff,
and painted as the snow fell silently like a curtain between myself and the sea.
I took care of their animals...[ donkeys, sheep, chickens, cats & dogs to be exact ] collected warm fresh eggs in the morning and found deer antlers along my mossy morning walks.
I also produced many new works in this tranquil setting, a creative outpouring of slightly new imagery.

One of these paintings, ' a hundred drifting moons has passed ' was part of a group show ART VERSUS POETRY at the Snap Gallery in March.
I was scheduled to have a solo show at the Snap Gallery for May 1st and had been creating a new body of work with this in mind, looking forward to working with Barry in his spacious
venue to showcase my larger works, but due to sudden unfortunate circumstances regarding Snap Gallery I will no longer be proceeding with this exhibit.

The result of this is [ in addition to approximately 20 other works ] I have 11 new paintings in my gallery/boutique since the New Year available for viewing.
Yes, we are running out of wall space but fortunately the work continues to be very well received and 4 paintings destined for that show have already sold.

I also have recently found some great antique garden treasures while road tripping to Seattle and the shop is looking very zen and soulful with my new earthy paintings.
New design opportunities have also opened up for me and I am anticipating creating some new textile and ceramic lines for a Canadian based home decor line.
I have just recently completed shooting and styling the online and print catalogue for this company as well, so it has been very busy with my commercial photography indeed.
Upcoming photo features will be running in both Western Living and Western Living Condo in the next few months, and a large painting of mine owned by television personality Susie Wall
is currently featured in an editorial in the April issue of Canadian House and Home.

Looking forward to ambient weather so I can get out with my camera again just for me! As I write, the shy sun has finally made an appearance...........
aahhh, I finally got my moment, and captured these signs of spring on a beautiful balmy saturday evening, crocuses in bloom, wild rabbits burrowing in the brambles, a glorious magnolia placed in the grass by a passerby

Early frost approaching

Well, it is that time of year again!
Frost in the morning & chilly afternoons, people bustling to & fro, hands filled with packages & peppermint lattes.
I carried home my arctic fir christmas tree yesterday afternoon in the bright sunshine...what a treat.

As yet another year comes to a close, I take time to reflect and am so grateful for all the wonderful experiences
& opportunities I have had over this year. The response to bringing my paintings into the space over the last few years has been so rewarding, I could never have imagined!
I am delighted despite all this that I am still being discovered by many as the new kid on the block...with many curious gushes of" how long have you been open?" We are still also garnering attention from new edgy magazines such as "The Block"
See the lovely article above as seen in their "Style Issue' this summer. It entices...."DO GO IN AND TAKE A LOOK FOR YOURSELF; IT IS A LITTLE LIKE THOSE LOVELY SHOPS YOU FIND IN SMALL FRENCH TOWNS, OR MAYBE ON A TONY SIDE STREET IN SANTA BARBARA.BUT ONLY A LITTLE, THIS PLACE IS UNIQUE."
I would like to thank everyone for all their support over the years, the evolution of my little shop has kept me absolutely inspired and fulfilled. The heat brings out the wonderful heady fragrances of all the candles in my warm little shop...Bourban Island vanilla, Tunisian jasmine and Tuscan blood oranges have me dreaming of far away places. Spent hours on my patio yesterday tending to my flowers which are finally blooming in full force, anticipating a few rare hot summer evenings where friends can gather around the table outside and let all their cares evaporate into the balmy air.

I have been very busy on photoshoots as of late, recently shot for the Fall issue of Western Living Condo, and for a profile on myself that will out in the next issue of a fresh new magazine The Block.
Had a winter catalogue to shoot for Thomson & Page furniture last week, so there we were in the heat setting the scene with the fireplace on, warm woollies and hot chocolate brimming with marshmallows! Of course when we shot the summer issue it was February and the skies were black as coal! But I cannot lament the seasons, for without them a great source of my inspiration would be gone. Needless to say, summer is my favorite time, or perhaps more accurately, late spring when the promise of long lingering days are still ahead.
We have been roadtripping a fair bit lately, and have picked up some interesting finds along the way. Spent time in Oregon, absolutely breathtaking scenery along the Columbia River, the Dalles and the Palouse region.A beautiful area for landscape photography. Portland was a treasure trove for antiques...found an adorable concrete garden ornament of a fawn, some fabulous milk glass pieces with a porpoise motif, and some very unique glass and ceramic items.Lots of wonderful tones and textures and raw natural elements too, deer antlers, conch shells, and garden decor.

It will be soon be my 6th anniversary on 6th ave in South Granville! I look forward to a celebration to mark this event sometime during our Indian Summer.......enjoy the sunshine.

Heather

Springtime in Holland

We are back from our fabulous trip in Europe. Never actually made it to France, Holland was just too charming & picturesque to leave! Early spring was such a lovely time to be there….I walked through acres of hyacinth fields, dramatic bands of deep blue, amethyst & coral made all the more powerful by the intoxicating heady fragrance. Swans preened in perfect form along the canals and marshlands, & the pastoral countryside abounded with infant lambs gleefully wobbling beside their wooly mothers. The sand duned coast with giant modern windmills turning in the sky created a surreal backdrop for the miles of grassy green dykes dotted with sheep.

I loved the architecture & atmosphere of Amsterdam, the Dutch have a wonderful design sense. I couldn’t help but peer into their homes as we walked along the cobbled streets, each one with it’s own charming vignette… oranges in a beautiful silver bowl on a clean white table with a shiny red bicycle propped against it….windowsills filled with potted succulents & orchids ….an ornate ‘over the top’ chandelier in a pared down room with distressed walls & a huge rustic bowl filled with faded rose blossoms. I kept mistaking personal residences for store fronts as their displays were so alluring!
Luckily, I did discover great curios shops & flea markets throughout Holland & have brought many treasures home. We stayed in a delightful B&B www.kunsthuiskort.nl in the remote northern town of Workum. This old converted school house was set atop their huge antique shop. The owner [who was also a painter /photographer!] had retained all of its original charm right down to the old school desks and classroom ephemera. Her garden courtyard was filled with rustic antiques & I spent the morning there in the sunshine packing my luggage with the all the antiques. I had found along the way. Old apothecary jars, enamel ware, mirrored art deco trays, mid century ceramics & offbeat little finds. Needless to say, I took many photographs on this journey & will have new works on display in the shop soon.
Of course I never stop searching locally for great items, & just this weekend I sourced out a beautiful selection of vintage ceramics, funky 50s glassware & very old bottles in all the soft watery tones I am so drawn to….so there is lots to choose from.

Wishing us all a wonderful spring and summer soon!
Heather

Europe bound

Europe bound….
The flower fields of Holland & the charming towns of France are beckoning me. Do clear skies count when they arrive with the stars and depart with the dawn…
Oh but we do live in a beautiful city. The other day I was blessed with the sight of two majestic bald eagles perched together at the top of a towering totem pole just a few blocks from my home in Kitsilano. The moon was rising behind them in the late day sky, and yes, I must say it was a bright clear day. I could see their feathers ruffling in the wind, their eyes scanning the city horizon made all the more dramatic by a backdrop of brilliantly snowcapped mountains.
Nature and it’s seasons - even seasons such as these that have devastated our Stanley Park and tested our patience with wind storms and countless days of rain – still continues to fill me with awe and inspire me to no end. I just can’t wait for the longer days to come so we can all be out enjoying its’ glory.

On that note, I will be kept very busy with some exciting new projects and “weather permitting” I may be shooting outside instead of minding the store, so please call ahead just in case we need to have irregular hours!

February Hours will be posted weekly on our answering machine 604 738 4284.

Painting: What if a bird flew by... We have just updated our site with new works in the painting and photography galleries. We had such a great fall that many paintings sold before we could ever get them up on the site! There has been a bit of a shift in the work, but evidently the seasons, the horizons, the elements of the sea and sky are still strongly influencing me. My palette is a little richer, moodier…[can we blame that on the weather?] Travels to both the east and west coast of the United States have also resulted in a new photographic series of landscapes and seascapes. I snapped the photo of the deer [in the top bar] while I was visiting my best friend in Nova Scotia. I have hired a charming new assistant, Alex, freeing me up to do these journeys, spend more time sourcing finds and, of course, be creative and paint!

Now we can stay in touch a little better with recent works, news of buying trips, openings, soirees and sales in the shop, and fresh exciting products that have just arrived.

We look forward to sharing our latest inspirations in both art and interiors, the moods, colors, motifs and textures that are moving us at the moment. From time to time we will highlight treasured spots and forward trends that we have discovered on our travels. I am loving deep yet fresh woodsy greens right now as well as rich chocolate browns, hints of warm coral, charcoal grays, silver, white and turquoise. For seasonal decorating ideas check out two recent articles I produced and photographed for BC Home’s Oct. issue and Garden Wise’s November issue. We have also just updated our “As Seen In” page with great press we have recently received.

With the holiday season upon us, the boutique is brimming with treasures to delight all the senses. As usual, our endearing vintage Christmas ornaments [featured in both BC Home Magazine and Vancouver Magazine November 2006] are rapidly departing to new homes. We have charming birds nests, silver branches, mercury glass votives, stationary sets and lovely handpainted glasses with bird motifs.

On a more masculine note we have buffalo horn bowls and trays, antler candlesticks, handmade leather bound notebooks, and strong black and white photos.

If you like yummy delicious scents like jasmine, almond, Bali lime, honey ginger, ruby guava, lemongrass and pomegranate you must try our enticing selection of body butters, lotions, bath milks and candles.
Our Tade guest soaps, made from an ancient recipe of pure olive oil, rose oil and sea salts are formed in beautiful molded shapes in an ancient tradition from the Middle East. They are wonderfully tactile, authentic and wonderful on the skin. If you love sleek, hip products our GOLD body care line, featuring real 23 karat gold, is a must.

We look forward to staying in touch - this page will be constantly evolving. We welcome feedback and enquiries.

We would like to extend a warm thank you to all our clients for their wonderful support, and best wishes for the holidays to all!

Hope to see you in the shop soon,
Heather Ross
